Launched in 2008, the Malawian Girls Short Story competition gives a voice to young women in Malawi by soliciting and publishing original fiction by and for secondary school girls. Following the success of the first competition, which awarded nearly $2,000 in prize money for the winners' school fees, we will be launching the 2nd Malawian Girls Short Story competition - Girls4Girls - in September 2011.

The competition is run in partnership with the Women's Desk of the Malawi Writers Union, a non-profit organization based in Blantyre, Malawi. Entries will be accepted in both English and Chichewa (Malawi's official and national languages) and prize money will go directly to the winners' school fees and supplies for the upcoming school year.

We are hoping to raise $5,000 to run Girls4Girls 2011. With your donation of $20 or more, you will receive a copy of the Winning Stories from the 2008 competition in PDF format. And with your donation of $35 or more, we will mail you a copy of the printed book of stories. In 2009, 1,000 copies of this book were printed and donated to 37 secondary schools across Malawi.
